Knowing Looks: “Listen to my 45″

Toronto based electronic/bass/2-step producer and all-round nice guy, Knowing Looks (aka Jason Hopfner) scores large with his second release on WNCL Recordings. His first release on WNCL, Abandoned Skips (not ships!) made the rounds to every cutting edge bass DJs on the planet (it’s that good!) This time around Hopfner decided to go all mental on us with two twisted tracks to warp your mind and bend your body. “Listen to my 45″, a highlight staple of his live show- uses a repetitive sample (from a famous, nameless pop/rock singer) over diced up beats accompanied by acoustic guitar strumming to balance out the craziness. It catches a groove and does not let go until the track warbles out to let us regain our sense of reality.
The flip side, “Ghost Baby” reminds me of a bleepy techno track reminiscent of Christian Vogel or Neil Landstrumm back in the day but with an updated paranoia with new “WTF was that sound” sounds- “future bleep”, anyone?
