How have 10 years gone by so fast? Wasn’t it just last week that we were stashing away emergency rations in our basements, getting all ready for the apocalypse (aka Y2K)?
This past decade was an interesting one for me because 2000 marked the actual year that I really began my increasing transition from guitars to beats and brass. That year, I found myself in London UK, living out of a suitcase and backpack, with the vast majority of my music collection back home in Toronto (MP3s weren’t really common yet!). Limited computer access, limited budget in a big budget city and minimal living got in the way of purchasing much new stuff. I felt generally out of the loop about new releases and new bands. I started going to London bars and clubs where beats played more of a prominent role. When I returned to Toronto a year later, I realized that I was feeling bored of the music I used to love and thought I would love forever, and found myself gravitating more towards the side of music I always did like but never pursued as much as I pursued indie rock and punk/hardcore. Guitars still have a (small) place in my music collection, but definitely not as much.
The past decade also saw my taste in music expand towards more open-minded pastures. No longer do I know a lot about one or two genres of music, but now I know a little about many different genres. Sometimes I miss being an ‘expert’ but I think I’d much rather have these broadened horizons and access to so much good music in all genres!
Anyway, more lists to come but for now, here are my top 25 albums of the decade. The list is heavily skewed towards the earlier half of the decade because I find I tend to pick up more EPs and individual tracks these days rather than entire albums. I’m not entirely sure why, but I can try to blame it on a couple of factors: DJing (which I started doing around 2003), the rise in popularity of digital culture, the internet allowing me to sample albums before deciding which tracks I like and therefore want to buy, my increasing interest in dance music which favours singles and EPs over albums… and this year, Serato.
I resolve to try to buy more albums in 2010.

Man, I had Up Bustle & Out’s ‘Master Sessions 2′ on my list but it ended up getting barely edged out. Glad to see you love their stuff too. I also had Cold House on there for a minute (it actually came out in 2001). Great album, maybe it just reminds me too much of a tough break-up I had. ;( I had Postal Service on the list too but probably because I seemed to hear it nearly everywhere I went, it wasn’t one I sought out or had to buy, and would be more of a smart objective pick. I remember you liked Quantic, thought that might be on there. Great list, Helen, I will try to check out the ones I don’t know yet.
OH SHIT! i forgot quantic! must update the list…
listening to arcade fire ‘funeral’ right now and wondering if i made a mistake putting it under ‘honourable mentions’ (akufen ‘my way’ is probably the album i would bump down if i did). love how epic this album is!

No way. Akufen needs to stay on your list. My Way is classic. That Solesides disc blew my mind up back in the day. I used to drive around aimlessly in my car trying to memorize Gift of Gab’s rhymes. Sheeit. Your list is great. I have something good to say about just about every disc on your list. A best of decade list seems to daunting for me…
i actually found it easier to compile a best of decade list than a best tracks of year list (still forthcoming!).. probably because the process is more methodical for me:
1. go through all records, CDs and MP3 albums and make a list of the ones you loved
2. narrow the list down, bit by bit
with top tracks, i have way more music to go through, and you never remember what you heard during what year, what tracks are actually from 2009, etc.
best albums of year list would be easier but i didn’t buy enough albums this year to really compile a decent list..
