Go Ghana!

Africa Spesh

Those that know me well know that I’m rooting for the geopolitical underdogs to win the FIFA World Cup (I can’t shed politics, yo! And how thrilling would it be to see a European nation get their asses whooped by a country from the Global South?).  So what does soccer have to do with music? With all eyes turned to South Africa this year, the good folks at Beyondjazz have unleashed a fantastic mix with 2 hours of music hailing from or inspired by the great continent of Africa, from countries like South Africa, Gambia, Cameroon, Nigeria, Ghana, Congo, France, USA, UK…

Check it out here.

This kind of music was among my first music/DJ loves. Although I don’t play the music out much these days (since my DJ attention has turned more to the electronic realm), Mulatu Astatke, Manu Dibango, Alhaji K. Frimpong, Orchestra Baobab and Etoile de Dakar will always hold a special place on my record shelves, and will still always hold a special place on my turntables at home (and sometimes out too)…
