One of my favourite artists of all time is the godfather of Ethiopian jazz, Mulatu Astatke, and this 10″ Soundway record of a few old re-releases of the funkier side of his music is one of my favourite records of all time (i.e. I will probably get buried with this record!):
This 1998 album of re-releases from the amazing Ethiopiques series (on Buda Musique) is damn good too (it’s all Mulatu Astatke!):

This album is also amazing, featuring various artists:

So.. Stones Throw has been jumping on the Ethio jazz train with some actual “direct trade” coffee for sale, and with Oh No offering up an album “inspired-by and sampled-from rare 60s and 70s Ethiopian funk, jazz, folk, soul and psychedelic rock.”
I like the addition of dirty hip hop beats but I have to admit, you can’t beat the real thing! Still, a really interesting album that I will be picking up.
