Ethio jazz meets… hip hop?

One of my favourite artists of all time is the godfather of Ethiopian jazz, Mulatu Astatke, and this 10″ Soundway record of a few old re-releases of the funkier side of his music is one of my favourite records of all time (i.e. I will probably get buried with this record!):

This 1998 album of re-releases from the amazing Ethiopiques series (on Buda Musique) is damn good too (it’s all Mulatu Astatke!):

Ethiopiques 4

This album is also amazing, featuring various artists:

Ethiopian Soul and Groove

So.. Stones Throw has been jumping on the Ethio jazz train with some actual “direct tradecoffee for sale, and with Oh No offering up an album “inspired-by and sampled-from rare 60s and 70s Ethiopian funk, jazz, folk, soul and psychedelic rock.”

I like the addition of dirty hip hop beats but I have to admit, you can’t beat the real thing! Still, a really interesting album that I will be picking up.
